Around The Fort

When considering all the residential hotspots San Antonio offers, making a decision on where to live may seem limitless. If visions of your new life here include short commutes, downtown attractions and a reasonably priced home, take a look at the neighborhoods nearest to Fort Sam Houston.

Dignowity Hill

In this historic neighborhood, you can choose from premier luxury living at the newly-built Vidorra Tower where high-rise condominiums start in the mid-$200s – with special incentives for military personnel through the Military Buyers Program – to charming historic, remodeled Victorian 3 bedroom, 2 bath homes starting in the low 100s.  With an incredible view of the downtown San Antonio skyline, Dignowity Hill boasts park and recreational areas, great eats at Fatty’s and Pat’s Barbeque, high-end dining at Ruth’s Chris Steak House and spirits at the legendary Tucker’s Kozy Korner lounge. Also look out for all of the internationally-acclaimed performances happening at the Carver Community Cultural Center and Historic Sunset Station at St. Paul Square, a 10-acre entertainment venue adjacent to the Alamodome.

Government Hill
Speckled with Texas Historical Markers, this region has supported military operations since construction of the Quadrangle began in 1876. This historic neighborhood, where land lots sell for $12-20 per square foot, is an investment oasis for relocating families. For those pursuing higher education,
San Antonio College
and St. Philips College are in close proximity. Here, you’ll be a part of all the action too. The AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, is only 10 minutes away and a short trip up I-35 will lead you into the heart of downtown San Antonio.
Mahncke Park

Bordered by Fort Sam Houston and the majestic San Antonio Botanical Garden, this quaint neighborhood rests next to the San Antonio Country Club and offers affordably-priced vintage housing. Find listings for a newly-renovated 3 bedroom, 2 bath craftsman bungalow for about $165,000. You can enjoy an afternoon in the nearby scenic Japanese Tea Gardens before grabbing a burger at the 50s-themed restaurant, Cheesy Jane’s. Grocery shopping is even more exciting here. At Central Market – one of the “freshest” markets in the nation – indulge your foodie-side with organic produce and Texas-raised beef, among its many selections. This neighborhood is also one mile from downtown, home to the San Antonio Museum of Art and The Witte Museum and bicycling distance from the exclusive campuses of Trinity University and University of the Incarnate Word.

Northwood / Oak Park
In the Northwood / Oak Park neighborhood, just north of Fort Sam Houston, listings for cozy 3 bedrooms, 2 bath homes start at $120,000. You’ll also have the added bonus of being close to the Alamo Quarry Market, Quarry Golf Club and San Antonio International Airport. Also found in the area is the nationally-renowned McNay Art Museum, eclectic menu selections at Twin Sisters Bakery & Café and the city’s hottest beats at clubs like the Revolution Room.

Westfort Alliance
When looking at investment potential, this up-and-coming neighborhood marks the spot. As the San Antonio River Walk extends north, Westfort Alliance will be reaping the benefits. Already an ideal location for Fiesta events, your family and friends can enjoy the close proximity to Brackenridge Park and Golf Course, shopping along Broadway Street and great lunch specials at the ever-popular, W.D. Deli. The San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium, along with the Pearl Brewery complex – including the Aveda Institute San Antonio: Pearl Development – are close-by too.
